Planning a surprise for a friends birthday bash isn’t easy. I learned this the hard way. I had no idea why I took up the responsibility but I did and there I was… Stumped! My brain was blank. Everyone threw in their own two cents. The gist of all their ideas was that it had to be extraordinary. Why? Simply because we had run into our early thirties and we were sick of life as it was. We wanted out! We wanted to let our hair down and enjoy.
Somehow that hadn’t been happening much. Come to think of it, it hadn’t been happening at all! Luckily for us magic was in the air. Not real magic but I like to think that magic actually exists! Anyway, I found a brochure in the newspaper rack as I passed the local newspaper shop. It was all about travel. Wishful thinking for me at that point of time but I decided to fuel my fantasies and picked it up. Traveling as a big group was a commodity that we could not afford. At least that is what I thought until I read the brochure. The brochure was titled ‘Cancun Group Packages‘.
Interesting! My curiosity was piqued. I scanned through the brochure and my jaw literally made contact with the pavement! The group rates were a steal. We could have our birthday bash in Mexico. What better way to kick off our heels and enjoy!
Long story short… I gave my friends a call and explained my idea. On hearing about the cost of the group trips to Cancun, fifteen of my twenty odd friends joined the bandwagon. It was not long before the date was set and the tickets were booked.
Life somehow seemed much more inviting than it did for a very long while. Just looking forward to the trip raised my spirits. After all the best part of a vacation is the wait and the anticipation. This vacation however topped everything that I ever imagined it would be. It was the longest birthday celebration ever!
Seven pristine beaches welcomed us.The weather was perfect. I got the tan of my dreams and the cool water soothed my skin whenever the heat got the better of me. I was lucky that my camera was waterproof! A part of the birthday celebrations was conducted under water. We scuba dived along the coral reefs. Somehow the pictures don’t do justice to the beauty that the depth of the sea holds. A few of my friends followed it up with snorkeling. I was too tired however. When you enter your thirties you have to accept the fact that your body is slowing down (At least that is the excuse I give myself).
I’ve lost track of the number of times we sang ‘Happy birthday’! Whether it was on the beach or among exotic flowers we made sure to embarrass our friend to the core. It was fun. It was almost as if we were teens again. The week long birthday bash flew by quickly but the partying did not end till we set foot into our houses once again.
Stark reality hits you quiet hard when you reach home. At least I know the younger me is alive and kicking! Who cares if I’m thirty and counting? I don’t and if others do…. Well they don’t matter anyway!
