The Mystical Kuldhara, India

inside Kuldhara After visiting the Bhangarh fort, I found another mystical place right near by. My fascination for all things Paranormal dates back to my childhood. As a child I had stayed in a haunted home and the experience instead of spooking me, just spurred my curiosity. and here is an  interesting experience at Kuldhara in Rajasthan, India, which I want to share with you.

As you might have already gathered, as my tour of India progresses, I am always on the lookout for the mystical places of India to add to my experiences.  Although it was not on my itinerary, I heard about a nearby place called Kuldhara, where it is believed that no one survives an overnight stay. Although various kinds of stories were being bandied about this place by the locals, one weirder than the other (thoroughly embellished with their own versions, I bet). But the one thing that held my attention was the ghost stories about this place and I decided to check it out.

Now Kuldhara as the story goes was the largest village in a community consisting of 84 villages. From the end of the late 13th century till about 1825, it was inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins who with their thorough knowledge of agriculture prospered in the rather arid desert. But one night in 1825 the people of the whole village along with the neighboring 83 villages vanished in the dark.

Why did the villagers having lived in the place for more than 7 centuries decide to pack up andJaisalmer leave overnight? It is said that an evil Dewan or minister had nefarious interest in the daughter of the village chief. To save his daughter from this man’s clutches the chief left the village, the villagers decided to follow him. Nobody saw them leave and it is believed that they settled in the city of Jodhpur. As they left the village they cast a curse upon it, that it would bring death to anyone who tries to stay on their land and try to make it their own.

The first thing that hit me when I reached the place was the sandstone houses. All abandoned and facing the vagaries of the weather for the past couple of centuries, the brown setting of these houses along with the backdrop of the desert set my heart fluttering. Me and a couple of my friends spent some time clicking pictures and I just wandered off.

And that’s when it happened. I had just entered the courtyard of this abandoned house, when I heard a voice, a child’s voice calling out…Di…Di. This is where it gets stranger, I was wearing my Ipod headphones and it was like the voice was coming through the earphones. At first I thought that my mind was playing tricks on me. But then I heard it quite distinctly, it was the voice of a little girl and had this yearning touch to it, like she was trying to reach out to me. I kept staring at the spot and couldn’t find anybody there. It has been a couple of weeks now, still sometimes I remember that voice and wonder who that little girl could be?
